. . . . . . . . . . A WARRIOR'S WISH®
Recognized as a Newman's Own Award Winning Innovative Program for 2007

A Warrior's Wish® supports the long-term goal of hope beyond recovery. These Wishes fulfill a desire for a better quality of life or support a quest for life-gratifying endeavors. Knowing that wishes can come true directly affects service members' spirits in addition to the families and communities that support them. Whether realizing a dream to sail, ride a bike again, or own a home adapted to specialized needs, Hope For The Warriors® honors the goals and desires of wounded service members and their families.

Wishes Granted

Hope For The Warriors® has been proud to grant these Wishes in the past few years. By granting these Wishes, Hope For The Warriors® restored hope in the eyes of these heroes. By supporting Hope For The Warriors®, you can restore hope to even more heroes.

A Wish to Help Others

family

This combat veteran had given up on life after two years with chronic pain and suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury. Fortunately, he was contacted by a nonprofit organization specializing in custom-trained service dogs for combat veterans. The group paired the warrior with Logan, a trained service dog, and turned this Marine's life around. Once isolated, he felt comfortable interacting again with family, friends, and even strangers. His depression lifted and with the friendship of Logan, he began to venture out in crowded areas. Logan was a wonderful, life-changing gift and this veteran knew that others could also benefit from a service dog. He turned to Hope For The Warriors® with a Wish to become a certified service dog trainer. His goal is to give back by helping other service members who are struggling with the same demons he once fought. Hope For The Warriors® approved his Wish with the help of MSA Security, a company that specializes in the use and training of dogs for security.

A Wish Helps Veteran Stay On Target

family

This retired Army sergeant, wounded in Iraq in 2006, spent the last few years stationed at Fort Hood's Warrior Transition Unit. In 2008, he began bow hunting and quickly discovered that he excelled with the bow. From bow hunting, he started the sport of archery, finding it therapeutic and enjoying the challenge. In 2010 and 2011, he represented the Army in the Warrior Games and competed in the Men's Standing Recurve Division. It was during those games that the warrior was recruited for the U.S. Paralympic Team. He garnered a coveted spot on the 2011 U. S. Paralympic Team and competed in Terino, Italy last July. In September, he competed for a spot on the 2012 Paralympic Team to take place in London next August. This soldier's Wish was for additional archery equipment to support his ambitious goals in archery. His sport has supported his physical and emotional rehabilitation as he has transitioned out of the Army and Hope For The Warriors® was proud to grant this Wish.

A Wish and a Gift

family

In July of 2008, this Airman's convoy was hit by an improvised explosive device. His injuries included double amputation below the knee, and moderate traumatic brain injury. In 2010, he medically retired from the Air Force and his wife accepted an honorable discharge to stay by his side and focus on his recovery. In support of her husband, she turned to Hope For The Warriors® and their A Warrior's Wish® Program to help reintegrate her husband into civilian life and a lifestyle that he loved. Through this Wish, she hoped to once again connect her husband with his passion for the outdoors, and foster the bond between him and their young son. In December 2011, Hope For The Warriors® granted this Wish and worked with Tracker Marine Boat Center to acquire a Tracker Pro Team 175 TXW fishing boat. Hope For The Warriors® was proud to grant this Wish, honoring both of these service members' service, while supporting the strong bonds of family that they uphold.

Treadmill Provides Soldier a Safe Route

For this Army veteran, running was a passion. He was proud to compete against soldiers more than 20 years younger than himself. In 2005, this changed when he sustained a brain injury in Iraq. The injury has caused severe memory loss, moderate cognitive deficits and seizures. These seizures cannot be controlled by medication and are more likely to occur when the core body temperature increases while exercising. However, studies show that exercise improves brain functioning. As this soldier exercised however, his seizures continued and it became unsafe to do the very activity that would help his physical and emotional rehabilitation. The soldier's wife turned to Hope For The Warriors® with a Wish. Her Wish was for a home treadmill with a harness system. With the exercise equipment in their home, her husband would be able to run without fear of having a seizure in public and with his family nearby for additional safety. We granted this Wish, and with the new equipment in their home, this soldier is getting back on track.

On the Road to Recovery and Independence

A soldier reached out to us for help. He suffers from traumatic brain injury, chronic headaches and vertigo as a result of multiple IED hits over the course of three deployments. He also has an unusual vision complication. Although he has no problems with his vision for objects in front of him, problems arise when he gazes to the extreme right or left and when he has to glance back and forth quickly. Because of these vision problems, he was limited to driving with supervision-a frustrating restriction for a self-reliant warrior. His Wish was for a back-up camera to be install on his vehicle; the addition would supplement his vision and meet the restrictions set by the department of motor vehicles. Now, with the camera set in place, he can drive safely and has regained his independence.

Alternative Treatment Provides New Hope

In May of 2007, the life of this Army Reserve Staff Sergeant was altered during a deployment in Iraq when a live mortar fell twenty meters away from him. Injuries sustained include chronic post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, as well as anxiety and sleep apnea. In 2009, he medically retired from the Army and focused on his recovery. After exhausting unsuccessful medical treatment options, he submitted an application to the Hope For The Warriors® A Warrior's Wish® Program. Desperate for a treatment that would heal heart, soul and mind, his Wish was to be sent to the Black Lagoon in Iceland, acclaimed for innovation in health and wellness. In December 2011, Hope For The Warriors® granted this Wish, proud to honor this service member's sacrifice while supporting the family's journey.

A Race Against Time

Warrior on Sail Boat

One hero's Wish was to compete in the 2010 Singlehanded Transpac sailing race-a single-man race from San Francisco to Hawaii. Our warrior had the courage, a growing knowledge of sailing and the water, a boat on loan--everything but time and money to offset some of his expenses. While deployed to Iraq in June 2004, a rocket propelled grenade hit his Humvee and he spent 19 days in a coma. Although strong and healthy now, he sustained permanent injuries include hearing loss, the loss of half of his left loon, and mild brain damage. Most significantly is that our warrior is slowly losing his vision due to the shrapnel that sprayed his eyes. Granting this Wish allowed him to pursue his sailing dream before losing his vision forever. Fittingly, our hero sailed in a boat called Warrior's Wish and completed his racing adventure on Independence Day. Hope For The Warriors® is proud to be part of this warrior's Wish.
